In collaboration with the Classics department of UC Irvine, Annie Loui set out to adapt a portion of the Iliad in the style of her Counter-Balance Theater company. Annie wanted the action on stage to be as direct as possible, and, with very few exceptions, avoid verbal narration. The design team was brought in early enough in the process that we were able to help steer the adaptation towards our own strengths. We wanted the show to be raw, elemental, and true to the scale required to show the scope of a war that involved hundreds of thousands, and lasted for years. My approach to that was a driving symphonic cinematic score, and effects that followed the gestural nature of the movement, while helping to distinguish our tiny cast of performers across their enormous cast of mortal and immortal characters.
What you are hearing now is the Curtain Call music, which moves form a theme tied to the Glory of Battle, to Athena's theme, to the Bard's theme.
