Hi!
I'm Ben. I use he/they pronouns. I am a freelance sound designer and composer for theater, circus, and dance, as well as a tinkerer and maker. I'm centered in NYC and New England, but work wherever a project takes me.
Sound can only exist at a specific intersection of space and time. Like all manner of live performing art, it has only the briefest and most ephemeral of moments to connect with its audience before it disappears and we are left only with its absence. As with a traveling circus, here today, gone tomorrow, there is a kind of magic in its passing.
Where I find the most joy in my work is in those moments where I can give that connection, that magic, to a performer as a tool in their work. I relish the chance to work directly with performers in rehearsal, integrating sound as one might with any prop or creating music as an ensemble explores movement.
I'm originally from Lawrence, Kansas, and I currently reside in South Strafford, Vermont with my partner, our daughter, dog, and cat. I love cooking, baking, hiking, and taking care of our little farm.
