With Menelaus wounded, the Trojans appear to have broken the uneasy truce with the Achaeans. Agamemnon swears revenge. He first rallies Ajax and his warriors, and then appeals to the wise and aged Nestor with whom he shares a brief quiet moment. They then march off to combat. The gods Ares, Athena, Terror, Panic, and Strife appear to guide the battle, each to their own predilection. A great battle ensues, at first chaotic, then leading to a brief dance as the sides clash swords.
